MEMORIAL ANDREA GROSSI: ITALY WINS THE FINAL AGAINST  SPAIN

Italy wins after an overtime against Spain the final of Memorial Andrea Grossi, played in Asti, last tournament before the European Championship for Under 16 girls (Piedmont, july 30th-august 8th). It was a surprise victory for italian team, that friday lost 91-65 a friendly match with Spain.

Spain is a great team, psysically and technically, and starts the match very strong: very closed defense, dominion at rebounds, fastbreak and Spain arrive at the rest after two quarter on 42-25. Italy wastes very much with errors and various ingenuousness.

In the third quarter italian defense improve very much, Spain pays the effort and make many errors on shot, Giorgia Sottana wakes up and all italian team improve its statistics. So, Italy begins the recovery that complete in the last quarter. At 5’ to the end, Italy lead 56-52: for Spain there are 10 points in 15’. The match is now very balanced, so the teams conquer overtime.

Italy begins very strong and go on 74-67 with a great series of Elena Russo then resists to the return of Spain in the last minutes.

In the other finals: France catch the third place defeating a good Poland and a too relaxed Czech Republic wins agains Greece for the fifth place.

Now all the teams will continue the trainings to European Championship for Under 16 girls that will starts july 30th in Asti, Biella, Cuneo and Novara and will end in Turin august 8th.
